Stuart Donald - Inverurie Golf CLub

Our Social Media & Marketing Assistant Liam visited Stuart Donald, Head Greenkeeper at Inverurie Golf Club. Here Stuart gives an insight into his greenkeeping experiences abroad, how he manages a golf course and some of his favourite bits of machinery!

 

  • Can you tell me a bit about your background and how you came to be Head Greenkeeper at Inverurie?

I've worked in the golf industry for 38 years and have been lucky to have been involved in 48 golf courses in 5 different countries, from planning, construction, grow in and maintenance. After coming back from Asia I spent 10 years in Hertfordshire at Knebworth Golf Club, where I struck up a great relationship with Tuckwell's, the local John Deere dealer, this lead on to our relationship with Double A. After a short illness, I wanted to to be closer to my family in Aberdeenshire, I took the opportunity to apply for the Head Greenkeeper position in February 2024 and the rest is history!

  • Can you tell me what a typical day running the course looks like for you?

We do a general check of the weather prior to getting started, I get the staff organised on the days priorities, making sure that we get out in front of the majority of golfers with the main works as we are a very busy club. 

  • What is the biggest challenge you face when maintaining the course?

Getting good, consistent bunker playability. 

  • What are some unique maintenance jobs you can remember that stand out to you?

That has to be when I was in Vietnam, I always had to check irrigation boxes or drainage man holes for snakes before usage!

  • What machinery do you guys use?

At the moment we have a John Deere 2550E-Cut greens mower that will be used as an approach/tees mower once we upgrade our greens mower next season. We have a John Deere 2500E that we currently use on our tees and approaches, along with a Pro-Gator with a sprayer and Dakota top dresser. We also have a John Deere 3046R tractor which pairs with the Lastec XR700 articulating rough mower

  • Any stand out bits of kit?

The Pro-Gator with the sprayer and top dresser along with the 3046R tractor!

  • How do you find your relationship with Double A?

We have a good working relationship with Gary, Gavin and the team at Double A's Northern Outlet in Kintore, which is only 3 miles away from us!
