The Walter Woods Award!
The Walter Woods Award!
Double A Sponsor the Walter Woods Award for Lifetime Achievement to Greenkeeping and to BIGGA!
This years’ winner was Cecil George who is well known throughout the Greenkeeping industry across the UK and beyond.
He started his career in 1943 and apart from the time spent serving his country as a Paratrooper at the end of the war he spent his whole working life on golf courses in and around Glasgow. Firstly at Whitecraigs Golf Club, then to Fereneze and to Cathcart Castle and then his final move to Lenzie Golf Club where he stayed as Head Greenkeeper and Golf Professional for 37 years until his retirement in 1991.
He was most passionate about education for greenkeepers both academically and through the association and in the 1960’s he was instrumental in setting up the first training courses for apprentice greenkeepers at Glasgow’s Woodburn House where he was involved in creating the courses, teaching the students and in setting the exams.
A staunch supporter of SIGGA - he was President in 1960 and in 1972 when he represented Scotland at the very first European Greenkeepers Conference in Switzerland.
He was also editor of the SIGGA publication TURFCRAFT in 1974. When BIGGA was formed in 1986 he was a first choice to be the Scottish Representative on their management board and he also sat on the BIGGA Greenkeeper Training Committee. He was always the man for asking a question during any Annual General Meeting either at section level or nationally and to this day he remains passionate about BIGGA and its future.
Unfortunately due to ill-health, Cecil could not attend the presentation lunch and asked BIGGA President Chris Kennedy to collect the award on his behalf.
