50 Years In The Groundcare Industry - Nigel McRae
Our Sales, Marketing & Media Assistant Liam sits down with Northern Outlet Service Technician Nigel McRae, to hear about his experience 50 years into the groundcare industry...
Nigel, how long have you been in the groundcare industry for?
I began my journey in the industry back in 1973 at Aberdeen Tractors, I joined there because my brother too was working there as a construction mechanic a year prior to myself joining. While he was working there, I stayed on at school for my 4th year before applying for a job there. The Managing Director, Peter Tong told me “If you’re half as good as your brother you’ll be fine” and gave me the job.
Besides Aberdeen Tractors, are there any other places you worked before joining us at Double A?
Yes, I worked at Aberdeen Tractors from 1973-1984, I then moved to Frew’s of Perth for 2 years (1984-1986), Barclay Ross (1986-1987), Barclay Ross & Hutchison (1987-2000), I then worked for 12 years at Aberdeen Football Club as a Groundsman / Mechanic. In 2012 I then started at Murcar Golf Club for around 8-9 years, then Newmachar Golf Club. COVID then came around and I was considered ‘at risk’ and had to leave. Finally, I landed at Double A and the rest is history.
What are some of the changes have you seen in the industry in 50 years from 1973 - 2023?
I’d say the biggest change is definitely electronics. I’ve worked through belt drive, hydraulic drive, electric drive, and now all electric. The engines back in those days had ‘proper ignition’ no ‘ne nah’ silly electronic ignition. Although, the setup of machines today is far superior, the technology nowadays is unbelievable! It’s come a long way.
What do you like most about your job?
I just like getting in and getting on with the job. It gets me out the house and keeps me busy, doing wee jobs like PDI’s and setting units. I’m on a zero hours basis with Double A so I come in to lend a helping hand when Gary (Northern Sales Specialist) asks me to.
